Product briefing

What it is and how it fits a coding workflow

OpenClaw is not primarily a code editor or repository coding agent. It is a gateway for a persistent assistant across chat channels and tools, with provider configuration and optional coding-agent backends such as Claude Code or Codex. The coding value is orchestration and handoff: start a request where you chat, route it to the appropriate agent, and keep access policy in one place. Treat it as an agent control plane; carefully restrict who can message it, which tools are enabled, and what repository or shell authority a connected coding backend receives.

Best fit

  • A self-hosted assistant reachable through messaging channels
  • Routing work between a personal agent and coding tools
  • Building a private automation gateway around existing agents

Probably not your fit if…

Direct IDE editing or a focused code-agent experience without gateway operations.

What stands out

  • ↗ Self-hosted gateway and many channel integrations
  • ↗ Can reuse existing coding-agent logins/backends
  • ↗ Extensible tools and provider configuration

Trade-offs to check

  • ! Not a dedicated coding agent by default
  • ! Gateway exposure and channel permissions are security-critical
