Product briefing
What it is and how it fits a coding workflow
Warp is an agentic development environment built around a modern terminal, rather than a conventional full IDE or a single CLI agent. The desktop app combines shell workflows, an editor, code review and an integrated Warp Agent; its automation platform can orchestrate local or cloud agents. A key advantage is that developers can also run third-party CLI agents such as Claude Code, Codex or OpenCode inside Warp and use the surrounding terminal UI, input handling and review affordances. Keep that distinction clear: a third-party agent keeps its own authentication, model choice and runtime behavior, while Warp Agent follows Warp’s own product and account controls. This makes Warp useful as a workspace for terminal-first engineers who want multiple agent sessions without abandoning normal command-line work. The project publishes source under an AGPL license, while the product includes managed services; licensing and hosted data policies should be evaluated separately. Warp is not equivalent to a shell-only agent or a fully self-hosted orchestration platform. Before enabling remote factories or automation, define which repositories and secrets are available, what runs locally versus in the cloud, and how changes are reviewed. For a straightforward terminal CLI, compare its agent and cost model against standalone tools; for teams with several agents, evaluate the orchestration and session-management layer.
